NATURE OF THE CENTRE OF STUDIES

The centre of studies is an articulation space between local dynamics and the actions and interests of external agents, who seek to generate synergy between diverse forms of approaching a specific territory, in order to promote social innovation, peace construction, and human development in complex contexts.

NATURAL CAPITAL

Identify biotic (living organisms) and abiotic (characteristics of the physical medium) components in a territory to analyse interactions, dynamics, and spatial patterns.

SOCIAL CAPITAL

Identify components and dynamics of social systems within a territory and analyse their relationship patterns, as well as the population’s cultural traits and identities.

TERRITORIAL HERITAGE

Analyse cultural and natural elements that represent a territory’s identity and understand the transformation of such territory by its inhabitants, as well as its influence on their relationship building.

CONFLICT GENERATING PHENOMENA

Identify and understand conflict-generating factors within territories, their causes, consequences, and their outreach in manifestation.

PEACE CONSTRUCTION

Identify and analyse the effects of armed conflict on the social, cultural, political, and economic dynamics in the local context, as well as the existing physical risks within the territory.

GLOBAL TRENDS

Understand and map global risk-triggering phenomena to analyse their impact and/or influence on market changes, their processes, standards, and/or regulations.

CAPITAL NATURAL

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Episteme’s research methodology stems from a systematic understanding of the territory, meaning that its functioning depends on the articulation and synergy of all its parts. This facilitates the identification of singular elements in the territorialization process and is sensitive to local dynamics, as well as intervention opportunities that might improve the capacities of local and foreign agents towards peace construction and intercultural development.

Our territorial studies are implemented through discourse analysis and documentary inspection, such as systematisation of information in timelines, facilitating the understanding of discursive transformations from the involved actors.

Reflexivity and participant observation are ethnographic elements that acknowledge local perception to describe and analyse symbolic representation systems constructed by the inhabitants of a territory. To make this possible, instruments like interviews, polls, focal groups, and social cartography are used. This enables the understanding of the territory from a communitarian logic, facilitating the formulation of relationship processes towards the transformation of conflicts, peace construction, and territorial development through synergy and the will of local institutional and corporate actors.

INNOVATION PROCESSES

The study of territorial dynamics and the transformation of their elements from a bottom-up and systemic approach are the mechanisms that allow us confidence in constructing multi-actor and multi-capital initiatives, which transform the local context through the generation of ideas and projects responding to needs in human, relational, economic, environmental, intellectual, and industrial fields.
